Karen started her art career as many very successful designers did – using macaroni as a media and specializing in “fridge art”. Early on in Karen’s life she knew she wanted to make art her life’s passion and she has. She spent her life after high school as a art student, first at the School of Associated Arts in St. Paul, MN and then on to Minnesota State University in Mankato, MN. Media never again consisted of any type of pasta.

Karen has been the owner of Hoeft Design since 1994. In a previous life she was an Art Director at H.T. Klatzky & Associates, one of Duluth, Minnesota’s largest advertising agencies. There she specialized in creative development of logos, ads, brochures, posters, signage, catalogs, newsletters and ad campaigns. Before that she was with Concept and Design, a Southern Minnesota Advertising Agency. Karen was general manager, account executive and graphic designer developing logos, catalogs, ads, displays and brochures for a varied client list. She took small business management classes during that same time, which has helped her understand and relate to businesses.

In 1994 Karen decided to switch gears and start her own business. She wanted to provide her clients quality service for a better price. She set out to build a better mousetrap and started Hoeft Design. Karen’s own business has brought her tremendous personal achievements and joy.

Karen’s interest in community has led her to serve as a board member on the Two Harbors Area Chamber of Commerce for many years, with two years as its board President. She has also served as chair of their Tourism Committee in it’s infancy.

When not working, Karen enjoys anything historical, traveling with her family, petroglyph/pictograph hunting, photography, gardening and making jewelry.
